Symbolism & Celtic Revival 1885–1918

Towards the end of the 1880s artists in Scotland began to respond to Symbolism, a movement with literary origins. This display includes works that show how Scottish Symbolism was boosted by the Celtic Revival which flowered in the 1890s. It was fuelled by an interest, among some, in spiritualism and a new belief system known as theosophy.

This display celebrates the universal power of story across generations, cultures and nationalities. George Paul Chalmers captures its compelling appeal in The Legend, where children listen with rapt attention to a gripping tale. Oral storytelling is often associated with the Highlands and especially Gaelic-speaking areas, but it was widespread and involved all Scottish languages and dialects. It is still promoted as a vibrant living tradition today.
