I take lots of hard work, done by others, cobble it together and take the credit. Most of the information contained herein was lifted from Wikipedia. My notes for a talk are normally just that, a list of the main points and then I make it up as I go along. In order to make this talk a little less tedious I handed out the sections on each of the characters to various people at the moot and got them to read them out. It's good to share. Well, it was good for me!
Before getting into the talk I pointed out that I am pagan and from a scientific/ technological background. The starting point for this talk was an article from the BBC, linked below, which was kindly read out by one of the many "volunteers".
Can religion and science bury the hatchet ?
I then posed the question "Did anyone spot the factual inaccuracy ?"
The article states that :-
"The idea of a battle between the two dates back to the medieval Church's condemnation of Galileo for his discovery that the Earth moves around the Sun rather than vice versa."
It may sound rather pedantic but Galileo did not get into trouble with the church because he made this discovery, he got into trouble with the church because he was argumentative. The person who made this discovery, or rather offered proof for this theory, was, of course, Copernicus.
I then posed the question "Is this a real argument ?" and I suggested the following :-
a) Probably not. The conflicts only arise when scientific theory contradicts religious doctrine.
b) Religion is a matter of belief whereas science is attempting to explain how things work.
c) Science employs experimentation and scientific method in order to provide proof.
At times I get the impression that what is behind the arguments is more about power or control.
In the dark ages the church had a strangle hold on society and a monopoly on education. In a rather contradictory approach the church possessed many books but banned those which it felt were subversive. This started to change prior to the renaissance with the rise of universities to educate lawyers for the courts thus creating an educated section of the population outside of the direct control of the church. Along with the guilds this gave rise to a mercantile middle class but it would still require a cataclysmic event to break the grip of the church on society.
I can't think of many examples of conflict between science and religion excluding the two mentioned in the article and in both cases the conflict with religion didn't happen until quite a while later :-
Darwin - evolution as opposed to creationism
Copernicus - helio-centric universe.
In order to help get our heads around what was going on around this time it was necessary to have a look at the historical events :-
The Copernican Revolution

Beginning with the publication of Nicolaus Copernicus’s "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium", contributions to the “revolution” continued until finally ending with Isaac Newton’s work over a century later.
The Copernican Revolution started with the publishing of the book "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" by Nicolaus Copernicus. His book proposed a heliocentric system (the sun at the centre of the solar system) versus the widely accepted geocentric system (the earth at the centre of the universe) of that time. Tycho Brahe accepted Copernicus's model but reasserted geocentricity. However, Tycho challenged the Aristotelian model when he observed a comet that went through the region of the planets. This region was said to only have uniform circular motion on solid spheres, which meant that it would be impossible for a comet to enter into the area. Johannes Kepler followed Tycho and developed the three laws of planetary motion.
Kepler would not have been able to produce his laws without the observations of Tycho, because they allowed Kepler to prove that planets travelled in ellipses, and that the Sun does not sit directly in the centre of an orbit but off to the side. Galileo Galilei came after Kepler and developed his own telescope with enough magnification to allow him to study Venus and discover that it has phases like a moon. The discovery of the phases of Venus was one of the more influential reasons for the transition from geocentrism to heliocentrism. Sir Isaac Newton's "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica" concluded the Copernican Revolution. The development of his laws of planetary motion and universal gravitation explained the presumed motion related to the heavens by asserting a gravitational force of attraction between two objects.
All of this sounds very science based until you take a closer look at some of the characters involved at this time :-
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543)

Nicolaus was a canon in the Catholic church who only took minor orders. A canon was a cleric living with others in a clergy house or, later, in one of the houses within the precinct of or close to a cathedral and conducting his life according to the orders or rules of the church.
He was a Renaissance mathematician and astronomer who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the centre of the universe. The publication of this model in his book "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres) just before his death in 1543 is considered a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making an important contribution to the Scientific Revolution.
In 1533, Johann Albrecht Widmannstetter delivered a series of lectures in Rome outlining Copernicus' theory. Pope Clement VII and several Catholic cardinals heard the lectures and were interested in the theory. On 1 November 1536, Cardinal Nikolaus von Schönberg, Archbishop of Capua, wrote to Copernicus from Rome:
Some years ago word reached me concerning your proficiency, of which everybody constantly spoke. At that time I began to have a very high regard for you... For I had learned that you had not merely mastered the discoveries of the ancient astronomers uncommonly well but had also formulated a new cosmology. In it you maintain that the earth moves; that the sun occupies the lowest, and thus the central, place in the universe... Therefore with the utmost earnestness I entreat you, most learned sir, unless I inconvenience you, to communicate this discovery of yours to scholars, and at the earliest possible moment to send me your writings on the sphere of the universe together with the tables and whatever else you have that is relevant to this subject...
Despite the near universal acceptance later of the heliocentric idea (though not the epicycles or the circular orbits), Copernicus' theory was originally slow to catch on. Scholars hold that sixty years after the publication of The Revolutions there were only around 15 astronomers espousing Copernicanism in all of Europe.
Paracelcus (1493-1541)

Paracelsus (born Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim) was a Swiss German Renaissance physician, botanist, alchemist, astrologer, and general occultist. He founded the discipline of toxicology (materials that are poisonous in large doses may be positive in small doses).
He is also known as a revolutionary for insisting upon using observations of nature, rather than looking to ancient texts, in open and radical defiance of medical practice of his day. He is also credited for giving zinc its name, calling it zincum. Modern psychology often also credits him for being the first to note that some diseases are rooted in psychological conditions.
Paracelsus pioneered the use of chemicals and minerals in medicine. His hermetical views were that sickness and health in the body relied on the harmony of man (microcosm) and Nature (macrocosm). He took an approach different from those before him, using this analogy not in the manner of soul-purification but in the manner that humans must have certain balances of minerals in their bodies, and that certain illnesses of the body had chemical remedies that could cure them.
Paracelsus viewed the universe as one coherent organism pervaded by a uniting lifegiving spirit, and this in its entirety, Man included, was 'God'. His views put him at odds with the Church, for which there necessarily had to be a difference between the Creator and the created.
"Many have said of Alchemy, that it is for the making of gold and silver. For me such is not the aim, but to consider only what virtue and power may lie in medicines."
John Dee (1527-1609)

John Dee was a mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, occult philosopher, imperialist and adviser to Queen Elizabeth I. He devoted much of his life to the study of alchemy, divination and Hermetic philosophy.
Dee straddled the worlds of science and magic just as they were becoming distinguishable.
Dee was an intensely pious Christian, but his Christianity was deeply influenced by the Hermetic and Platonic-Pythagorean doctrines that were pervasive in the Renaissance. He believed that numbers were the basis of all things and the key to knowledge, that God's creation was an act of numbering.
Dee was a friend of Tycho Brahe and was familiar with the work of Nicolaus Copernicus. Many of his astronomical calculations were based on Copernican assumptions, but he never openly espoused the heliocentric theory.
Dee applied Copernican theory to the problem of calendar reform. In 1583, he was asked to advise the Queen about the new Gregorian calendar that had been promulgated by Pope Gregory XIII from October 1582. His advice was that England should accept it, albeit with seven specific amendments. The first of these was that the adjustment should not be the 10 days that would restore the calendar to the time of the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, but by 11 days, which would restore it to the birth of Christ. Another proposal of Dee's was to align the civil and liturgical years, and to have them both start on 1 January. Perhaps predictably, protestant England chose to spurn any suggestions that had papist origins, despite any merit they may objectively have, and Dee's advice was rejected.
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

His work marked another step towards the eventual separation of science from both philosophy and religion; a major development in human thought. He was often willing to change his views in accordance with observation.
His multiple interests included the study of astrology, which at the time was a discipline tied to the studies of mathematics and astronomy.
In the Catholic world prior to Galileo's conflict with the Church, the majority of educated people subscribed to the Aristotelian (or Ptolemaic) geocentric view (Aristotle's theory of homocentric spheres, and Ptolemy's mechanism of eccentrics and epicycles) that the earth was the centre of the universe and that all heavenly bodies revolved around the Earth, despite the use of Copernican theories to reform the calendar in 1582.
After 1610, when he began publicly supporting the heliocentric view, which placed the Sun at the centre of the universe, he was opposed by astronomers, philosophers and clerics. One of the latter, Niccolò Lorini, eventually lodged an informal complaint against Galileo with the prefect of the Congregation of the Index, and another, Tommaso Caccini, formally denounced him to the Roman Inquisition, early in 1615. The subsequent investigation led to the Catholic Church's condemning heliocentrism as "false" and "altogether contrary to the Holy Scripture" in a decree by the Congregation of the Index in February 1616. Although Galileo was not then judged to have committed any offence, he was nevertheless warned to abandon his support for heliocentrism - which he promised to do. When he later defended his views in his most famous work, "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems", published in 1632, he was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy", forced to abjure, and spent the remaining nine years of his life under house arrest.
Robert Boyle (1627-1691)

An alchemist. Gave us Boyles law (pressure and volume are inversely proportional at a set temperature in a closed system). Considered to be the founder of modern chemistry. Went to Florence in 1641 and studied the work of Galileo Galilei. He was a devout and pious Anglican and is noted for his writings in theology.
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726)

He was a devout but unorthodox Protestant Christian and, unusually for a member of the Cambridge faculty of the day, he refused to take holy orders in the Church of England, perhaps because he privately rejected the doctrine of the Trinity. Beyond his work on the mathematical sciences, Newton dedicated much of his time to the study of biblical chronology and alchemy, but most of his work in those areas remained unpublished until long after his death.His book "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica" ("Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy"), first published in 1687, laid the foundations for classical mechanics. Newton's Principia formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation, which dominated scientists' view of the physical universe for the next three centuries
By deriving Kepler's laws of planetary motion from his mathematical description of gravity, and then using the same principles to account for the trajectories of comets, the tides, the precession of the equinoxes, and other phenomena, Newton removed the last doubts about the validity of the heliocentric model of the Solar System.
Perhaps the movement which most influenced Isaac Newton was Rosicrucianism. Though the Rosicrucian movement had caused a great deal of excitement within Europe's scholarly community during the early seventeenth century, by the time Newton had reached maturity the movement had become less sensationalized. However, the Rosicrucian movement still would have a profound influence upon Newton, particularly in regard to his alchemical work and philosophical thought.
The Rosicrucian belief in being specially chosen for the ability to communicate with angels or spirits is echoed in Newton's prophetic beliefs. Additionally, the Rosicrucians proclaimed to have the ability to live forever through the use of the elixir vitae and the ability to produce limitless amounts of time and gold from the use of The Philosopher's Stone, which they claimed to have in their possession. Like Newton, the Rosicrucians were deeply religious, avowedly Christian, anti-Catholic, and highly politicised. Isaac Newton would have a deep interest in not just their alchemical pursuits, but also their belief in esoteric truths of the ancient past and the belief in enlightened individuals with the ability to gain insight into nature, the physical universe, and the spiritual realm.
As can be seen from the above each of the scientist also had a religious dimension whether that be Catholic, Protestant, or Anglican whilst also being Rosicrucian, Hermetic, or Alchemist. They really don't seem to have suffered any conflict of interests.
The occult is that which is left over when science has tried to explain everything. Over the years the amount explained by science has increased but there is still a remainder of wonder.
The alchemists laid the ground work but it is interesting that science is selective in it's recognition of those involved. Paracelcus and Dee were rarely mentioned in scientific discussions but perhaps that is beginning to change.
What is Alchemy ?
The word alchemy was borrowed from Old French alquemie, alkimie, taken from Medieval Latin alchymia, and which is in turn borrowed from Arabic al-kīmiyā’ ‘philosopher's stone’. The Arabic word is borrowed from Late Greek chēmeía, chēmía ‘black magic’ with the agglutination of the Arabic definite article al- . This ancient Greek word was derived from the early Greek name for Egypt, Chēmia, based on the Egyptian name for Egypt, kēme (hieroglyphic khmi, literally ‘black earth’, as opposed to red desert sand).
The Medieval Latin form was influenced by Greek chymeia meaning ‘mixture’ and referring to pharmaceutical chemistry.
Defining objectives of alchemy are varied but historically have typically included one or more of the following goals: the creation of the fabled philosopher's stone; the ability to transmute base metals into the noble metals (gold or silver); and development of an elixir of life, which would confer youth and longevity.
Though alchemy played a significant role in the development of early modern science, it differs significantly from modern science in its inclusion of Hermetic principles and practices related to mythology, magic, religion, and spirituality.
Alchemy covers several philosophical traditions spanning some four millennia and three continents. These traditions' general penchant for cryptic and symbolic language makes it hard to trace their mutual influences and "genetic" relationships. One can distinguish at least three major strands, which appear to be largely independent, at least in their earlier stages: Chinese alchemy, centred in China and its zone of cultural influence; Indian alchemy, centred around the Indian subcontinent; and Western alchemy, which occurred around the Mediterranean and whose centre has shifted over the millennia from Greco-Roman Egypt, to the Islamic world, and finally medieval Europe. Chinese alchemy was closely connected to Taoism and Indian alchemy with the Dharmic faiths, whereas Western alchemy developed its own philosophical system that was largely independent of, but influenced by, various Western religions. It is still an open question whether these three strands share a common origin, or to what extent they influenced each other.
The introduction of alchemy to Latin Europe occurred on 11th February 1144, with the completion of Robert of Chester's translation of the Arabic Book of the Composition of Alchemy.
Alchemists contributed distillation to Western Europe, so it wasn't all bad.
The attempts of alchemists to arrange information on substances, so as to clarify and anticipate the products of their chemical reactions, resulted in early conceptions of chemical elements and the first rudimentary periodic tables. They learned how to extract metals from ores, and how to compose many types of inorganic acids and bases.
During the 17th century, practical alchemy started to disappear in favour of its younger offshoot chemistry, as it was renamed by Robert Boyle, the "father of modern chemistry". In his book, "The Skeptical Chymist", Boyle attacked Paracelsus and the natural philosophy of Aristotle, which was taught at universities. However, Boyle's biographers, in their emphasis that he laid the foundations of modern chemistry, neglect how steadily he clung to the scholastic sciences and to alchemy, in theory, practice and doctrine. The decline of alchemy continued in the 18th century with the birth of modern chemistry, which provided a more precise and reliable framework within a new view of the universe based on rational materialism.
In the eyes of a variety of esoteric and Hermetic practitioners, the heart of alchemy is spiritual. Transmutation of lead into gold is presented as an analogy for personal transmutation, purification, and perfection. This approach is often termed 'spiritual', 'esoteric', or 'internal' alchemy.
Practitioners and patrons such as Melchior Cibinensis and Pope Innocent VIII existed within the ranks of the church, while Martin Luther applauded alchemy for its consistency with Christian teachings. Both the transmutation of common metals into gold and the universal panacea symbolized evolution from an imperfect, diseased, corruptible, and ephemeral state toward a perfect, healthy, incorruptible, and everlasting state, so the philosopher's stone then represented a mystic key that would make this evolution possible. Applied to the alchemist himself, the twin goal symbolized his evolution from ignorance to enlightenment, and the stone represented a hidden spiritual truth or power that would lead to that goal.
How do pagans feel about all of this ?
Do pagans accept science and a rational world view ?
Does the previous exclude the wonder of nature ?
I find science interesting in that the insights provided by science make the universe more fascinating when you discover how it works. The arguments about a hands-on god (determinism vs. free will) went out a long time ago and this removes any contradiction.
There are still those on either side who are willing to stir it up for their own purposes.
Recent developments :-
Placebo effect.
Black holes.
String theory.
Dark energy.
Dark matter.
Lets face it, when you read about these theories they sound more like mysticism than science. The only proof for the last two would appear to be the requirement to fix an unbalanced equation by creating new but undetectable entities. Perhaps god is composed of dark matter.
Scientific method is employed by the chaos magicians. By noting what they set out to achieve, how they went about it, and the actual result, they are applying experimental methodology to magic. On the other hand I still feel uncomfortable when I hear a scientist describing their discovery as a "leap of faith".
It looks like ideas continue to flow back and forward between the different subjects.
I'm glad about that.
